    Hockey Conversation with frog's dad
frog: ... and the fucking Flyers* need to go down, because if they win the cup this year, I am going to spit nails.

frog’s dad: Oh, I wouldn’t worry about that this year, there’s no way they’ll-

frog: NO NO NO. STOP. FUCK YOU, STOP THAT RIGHT NOW. YOU’RE CURSING THEM.

frog’s dad: What do you mean, cursing them?

frog: You know how it works! Whenever you assure me of something, the opposite always happens.**

frog’s dad: They’re going to go all the way this year. The Flyers have this one in the bag. I’m sure they’re going to win the Cup.

frog: Thank you for using your powers for good!

And then, the very next night, the Penguins beat the Flyers, 10-3.

    Coincidence? You be the judge.

Next year, I’m having him use his powers to assure me that there is absolutely, positively no way in hell the Hawks will win the cup. Unless of course the Avs make it to the playoffs, but I’m not holding my breath on that one. *sigh*

*They stole Lappy from us and kept him, okay? Yes, STOLE: that’s my story, and I’m sticking to it. And being bitter and resentful about it.

** See also: the deaths of Kurt Cobain and George Carlin, David Bowie's lack of touring, the cancellation of a Black Crows tour, and every time he has ever assured me far in advance that I won't have to worry about snow when I'm driving over to Gunny.

Hey kids, just FYI, it looks like next week is National Park Week, which means that admission to all parks is free 04/21/2012 - 04/29/2012.

Also, Mesa Verde is running a sweepstakes for what looks like a pretty cool two day get-away package, incl. lodging and food (details at link above).

Why it's a bad idea to talk about politics in the workplace...
Just had to explain the meaning of "santorum" to a coworker.

The same coworker I had to explain the definition of "teabagging" to last year.

Yes, I am a veritable fount of NSFW political information.

Am posting from Hamish, in a yurt that is literally six miles past Remote. Stepdad is on the porch playing Taps on his bugle; mom's making garlic butter sauce and prepping lobster tails for grilling; baby sis is updating her daily Christmas song on Facebook. Later, I believe we are setting off fireworks and making s'mores on the wood stove.

Getting here was kind of... um... a little stressful yesterday. But Bookie is a fucking rockstar of a roommate, and my dad is good at organizing, and I made it here in one piece. And I am very thankful for it.

    Gone Between
On Monday, a coworker who knows I’m a ginormous nerd came over to my desk and said, Oh, hey, I have to tell you about this book we bought over the weekend, Ender’s Game? And I was all, Um. And she was all, Oh, is it bad? and I was all, Well, a lot of people really like it, and it’s considered a classic of modern sci-fi, but the author is, um, kind of a homophobic asshat? And she was all, ... dammit. I am going to kill the person who recommended that to us.

As I was lying in bed falling asleep that night, I started thinking about other books I could recommend to her, by authors who weren’t complete shitefucks. And that got me thinking about some of the greats of the genre that we’ve lost recently, and that led to me thinking about Anne McCaffrey. As you do. At least I thought to myself, she’s still alive and kicking.

Back when I was 11, we moved to Page, AZ. And, like, take how socially awkward I am now, and then multiply that by a factor of adolescence, and you will have some idea of how long it took me to make friends there. In the meantime, I did what I always do, and devoured about a book a day. My aunt and uncle came for a visit, and my aunt and I got to talking books. She mentioned this series that had dragons, and a strong female protagonist, and was written by a woman. Our local library had them, so I started in on the first book in the series – a green covered paperback with a golden dragon on the front.

Don’t get me wrong, I know that her writing had some problematic elements to it (and she herself has some… interesting ideas about human sexuality) but back then? All I knew was that those books were total escapism. The world-building was so thorough, the characters so real. I devoured every one of them I could get my hands on at the library, and then started collecting them on my own shelves. They were my gateway drug to all of the hundreds of books by the dozens of sci-fi authors I spent the rest of my adolescence reading.

I hadn’t read much by her in recent years – I wasn’t terribly keen on the last series of hers that came out as I was finishing high school, and I haven’t been reading as much SFF in general. So I didn’t realize how hard the news of her death last night would hit me. I have to admit, I full-on sobbed. She was a true trailblazer in the genre, and we will not see her like again.

Things in which frog is overly invested!
So I don't think I have subjected you all to a rant about that stupid fucking movie about how Shakespeare didn't write all those plays, but hoo-boy does its very existence make me want to spit nails. Not least of all because people who know I dig Shakespeare keep asking me if I've seen it, and I have to explain how there is no way I am financially supporting that shit.

I mean, there are some people I really respect who doubt that Shakespeare actually wrote all those plays (Mark Rylance, I am looking at you, sir) and I'm sure most of them know way more about the topic than I do. But what I do know makes me think that they are WRONG WRONG SO VERY WRONG AND DID I MENTION WRONG.

And the main problem with this film is that, from what I have heard, it is presenting this theory completely uncritically, and so some people who are not terribly familiar with Renaissance and Early Modern theatre history are going to come away from it thinking it makes a lot of good points, and hey, maybe it's the actual truth! Granted, I have not seen the film, but I am guessing that it does not dwell heavily on the fact that the theory it is promoting was first proposed by a British schoolmaster. In 1918.

Poor Joyous, if she is reading this, is probably having traumatic flashbacks to watching the history channel with me and having to listen to me scream at the TV about SPECIAL SNOWFLAKE SCHOLARSHIP AND NO YOU ASSHOLE YOU HAVE NOT DISCOVERED THE HIDDEN TRUTH OF THE MATTER AT HAND YOU ONLY HAVE A THEORY THAT MOST OF THE RESPECTED SCHOLARS IN YOUR FIELD DO NOT AGREE WITH STOP SAYING WORDS.

But, of course, "I have an alternate theory to the prevailing paradigm" does not sell advertising or tickets nearly as well as "WATCH AS I REVEAL WHAT EVERYONE ELSE WAS TOO STUPID TO DISCOVER A WINNAR IS ME."

In conclusion, if you want to read a really balanced and easily accessible summary of the issue, you should check out Bryson's biography of Shakespeare*. And until you can get your hands on that, you should check out this piece by Eric Idle, which makes me want to hug him.

*Really, you should probably check this out anyway if you haven't already, because it is a book by Bill Bryson. About Shakespeare.

Putting the fun in dysfunctional )

In other familial news, talked to my mama last night. Her hubby is on his way out here to spend a week doing maintenance on my sister's house, because he has the time off work while he's recovering from knee surgery. This will be taking it easy for him, as he spent the last week of recovery finishing off their bedroom pod on their retirement property, and wiring their yurt for electricity.

After telling my mother earlier that they just couldn't afford the beadboard ceiling she wanted, he totally surprised her with one for her birthday. That's right, her birthday, which is still a month off. And he has hinted there may be more surprises awaiting her up at the land between now and then.

And, you know, don't get me wrong, I love my stepdad. He's a genuinely kind and thoughtful man, in addition to being, as evidenced above, really handy. But I think sometimes what I love the most about him is how he treats my mother. How considerate he is of her, and how appreciative he is of all the things she does for him, and of all that she is. He doesn't take her for granted, and he makes sure she knows that.

It actually makes me a little verklempt sometimes, because, IDK, it's like I'm finally getting to see my mama be treated the way she deserves to be, and I'm just so thankful to the universe on a regular basis that they were able to find one another.

I did not have the most productive of weekends, as I spent most of it sleeeeeeping. But when I was conscious, there was lots of British procedural television [Law and Order UK (you complete and utter bastards, you), Lewis (ohgodohgodohgod have just discovered there is fic for this fandom *wallows*), and Luthor (Stan Shunpike kills muggles, Idris Elba needs to report to my pants immediately if not sooner)].

Sunday evening I made a pint of pear butter w/ leftover pears from the weekly free organic fruit at work. It was kind of improvised, and I have not had the chance to try it once it’s set, but I have high hopes, what with the vanilla, nutmeg, and ginger involved.

I pureed the cooked and mashed pears with the help of a Foley food mill, kindly lent to me by a coworker who has been singing their praises ever since she heard about my adventures in crabapple butter last fall. And her proselytizing proved accurate: A+++, will be ordering my own post-haste. This year, I will not have to spend an hour trying to force crabapple puree through a sieve with a spatula. \o/ \o/ \o/

Another dental appointment (still working on filling up 10 yrs worth of cavities).

This time around, I was all, "So, maybe you could just shoot me up with a double dose before we start?" and my dentist was all, "I'll use the really strong stuff this time!"

Three hours later, and I still can't smile without committing unintentional Wentz-Face, because I have NO CONTROL over the left side of my mouth.

    Pain free fillings, though! \o/ \o/ \o/

"To our Fans and Friends: As R.E.M., and as lifelong friends and co-conspirators, we have decided to call it a day as a band. We walk away with a great sense of gratitude, of finality, and of astonishment at all we have accomplished. To anyone who ever felt touched by our music, our deepest thanks for listening." R.E.M.

So. Sobbing at my desk right now would probably not be a good thing, yeah? I just... fuck. Fucking hell.

Statements from each band member over at NPR, since the band's site seems to be a little overwhelmed at the moment.

I am the very classiest of humans.
My underwire snapped in the usual spot just as I was getting on the light rail this morning. And I was all, w/e w/e, I’mma tough it out and deal, rather than turn around and go home and be half an hour late for work.

I lasted with the pokey-gougey-pinchy until about 5 minutes ago, whereupon I snapped, took my desk scissors into the bathroom with me, and performed an underwiredectomy.

Now I’m wondering if I should also just go ahead and do the other side, for the sake of symmetry.
